Achim Bachem studied mathematics and physics from 1969 to 1973 at the University of Cologne and the University of Bonn. He earned his doctoral degree in 1976 and completed his postdoctoral qualification in 1980 in the field of discrete and combinatorial mathematics. In 1980, Achim Bachem was appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. In 1982 he accepted a position at the University of Bonn in the field of Operations Research. He was appointed tenured Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cologne in 1983, where he headed the Institute of Mathematics. He was also the founding director of the Institute of Computer Science in 1988 as well as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences from 1989 to 1991. Between 1993 and 1996, Professor Bachem was additionally Chairman of the Board for the Center for Parallel Computing, ZPR (now the Center for Applied Informatics, ZAIK), which he helped found at the University of Cologne.
Professor Achim Bachem is also Vice President of the Helmholtz Association, a member of the Deutsche Akademie für Technikwissenschaften (acatech), and a member of supervisory boards in companies in industry and business, such as Wincor-Nixdorf AG and a member of the NRW.Bank advisory board.
