Prof. Dr. Ernst Schmachtenberg

Ernst Schmachtenberg studied Mechanical Engineering at RWTH Aachen and completed his doctorate in 1985 at the RWTH Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV). After working at IKV as a research assistant and head of division until 1988, he became Head of Research and Develpoment at the officially certified research and testing centre of Süddeutsches Kunststoff-Zentrum (SKZ), Würzburg, where he was also member of the Management Board.

In 1990, Schmachtenberg joined Bayer AG, Leverkusen, where he was Head of the Polymer Processing Group and, from 1991, Head of the Design department at the Polymer Division. Between 1993 and 2001 he was Chair of Polymer Technology at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Essen University, and at the same time CEO of IKM GmbH, Essen. At Essen University, he was Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Finances for a four-year term. In 2001, Schmachtenberg was appointed as Chair of Plastics and Materials Technology at RWTH Aachen and became a member of the IKV management board. Between 2006 and 2008, when he was appointed as Rector of RWTH Aachen University, he was Chair of Polymer Technology at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Ernst Schmachtenberg is a member of the Scientific Alliance of Materials Technology (WAW) and of acatech, the German Academy of Technical Sciences. For several years, he was active as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation (DFG). Between 2010 and 2013, he was President of the TU9 German Institutes of Technology; since January 2014, he has been President of the IDEA League.
